can afci circuit breakers protect two wire systems (knob & tube or other types) in an old house ?

They will protect two wire circuits.
Nuisance problems arise not so much because of a missing EGC but because of miswiring issues. Which is really a problem that just never had been exposed before.

That has been my experience also especially on K&T wirig where it seems the closest neutral available was used on any circuit.
