If I extend a circuit of 6 feet I know it needs to be afci protected . But if I tap off existing outlet in a living room and install a vent van and switch off that outlet can I just thow in a afci outlet to cover that extension to the circuit ?

It will depend which code cycle are you on.

Without getting the book out I believe 2014 does require it and you can install a AFCI receptacle. (Maybe I should get my book out)

Are you adding any additional outlets?:D

If you are then yes, you can do that, but the obc afci must be located at the 1st rec on that ckt per 210.12(B)(2) per the 2014.

Also, forget anything about 6ft in the case of adding additional devices/outlets as it is irrelevant- the 6ft exception to 210.12(B) is only good if your aren't adding any new outlets and was added fmu solely for panel swaps.

Does 210.12(b) get invoked regularly for this type of job? To be honest prolly not, but strictly speaking from a CYB code perspective, it is required.

That is compliant as long as the extension wiring is protected. Now suppose that you extend the circuit to an area that does not need afci protection, then is afci required? IMO, the afci would not be required in that scenario

Vent fan is going in a living room I was going to tap off an outlet in that room and install a timer switch to control the vent fan . And replace that regular outlet with afci outlet . Sound code compliant?
