AFCI protection

Hello everyone. I've been tasked with installing an exterior receptacle in a surface mounted 2x4 junction box. I'm very well aware that AFCI protection is not required for exterior outlets but GFCI protection is.

What I would like to know as if AFCI protection would be required because I'm pulling power off (extending the circuit) an interior outlet.

2020 NEC. I would be extending the circuit like 2 ft on a "long day".

Like I stated prior, I will be pulling it off of an interior receptacle in a house that did not require CAFCI protection when it was built.
 
If not adding more than 6’ of wire, you should not need AFCI, imo. If you are getting it inspected, it might be worth a call to confirm.

I would say yes afci required. The 6-ft exception requires no outlets or devices to be added. There is a little bit of a gray area, in my opinion, on where the modification happens, but it sounds like your modification would be at least partly in an afci area anyway. Have you read 210.12? What do you think particularly of (D)?
 
Everyone thinks for your answers. I got the answer that I needed. In order to extend this circuit (Even though it's to an outside GFCI receptacle) I would have to add arc fault protection to the entire circuit because I'm adding a device.

I wish Florida would ban the requirement for arc fault protection

I would have no problem adding art fault protection from the extension after. But if I do this extension and add this receptacle, I have to arc fault the entire circuit. Bummer

AFCI requirements are also triggered if existing outlets are replaced, so your AFCI is likely to abate existing construction defect due to remodel outlets.
