210.12 AFCI protection.

Exception No. 1: Where RMC, IMC, EMT or steel armored cable, Type AC, meeting the requirements of 250.118 using metal outlet and junction boxes is installed for the portion of the branch circuit between the branch-circuit overcurrent device and the first outlet, it shall be permitted to install a combination AFCI at the first outlet to provide protection for the remaining portion of the branch circuit.

This exception sounds to me like there is a ''receptacle AFCI'' that would be like a GFCI receptacle. Has anyone started making such a device ?

Lots of patents on it, at least one was on the market for a very short time, but nothing presently on the market with a UL listing.

last I heard, the breaker companies are fighting the use of recepts, the idea is that the home run is not AFCI protetcted...
How about the home runs from the kitchens, garages, laundry rooms, basements, outside receptacles, etc.? Oh, I forgot . . . they let those go so the GFCI receptacle guys would get on board and let the "whole house" requirement into the Code.

They lost that one. Take a look at 210.12(B) Exception #1 in the 2008 NEC.

I think we should all put our foot down for safety - and oust the manufacturers from the code process all together - who let them in there anyway?!? They market on fear of fire - on what proof?

Anyone got a hold of an INDEPENDANT study of AFCI's making anything safer?
