AFCI Receptacle

I've heard rumors that P&S actually has some, but they are the result of the first NEC requirement that just receps in a bedroom be AFCI-protected. Their R&D department made some up for testing & listing purposes, then the rules changes from receptacles to outlets, so they dropped any further action with the receps and started working on breakers instead. If this is the case, they are not combination-type AFCI, so even if they hit the shelves, they wouldn't pass muster.Remember, this is only a rumor!

They were available but because their was no demand for them the manufacturers stopped making them. I suppose if demand for them rises again they may bring them back into production. This is what we were told by a Code panel member

You can lead a horse to water but ...........

'still looking for the AFCI receptacle anyone know if it is out on the market yet?'

Not yet but that may change in the next 1? years. P&S has a listed AFCI receptacle but declined to market it since it required a steel armored cable or metallic raceway to the first receptacle outlet. However, a new proposal was accepted in the panel meeting (the balloting is not finished yet) to permit Type NM cable to the first receptacle outlet and the AFCI could then be installed. Not only P&S but other receptacle manufacturers will start producing AFCI receptacles if this makes it through the code making process. :)

What do they fix ? The circuit needs them not the outlet

210.12(B) Exception No. 1.

Even now, I can leave the homerun unprotected if I install the AFCI protection at the first outlet. Can't do that yet, until the receptacle AFCI appears on the market.
