I have furnace water heater all 120V single phase with disconnects direct wired branch circuits to panelboard. NEC 2014 I see closets to have AFCI. Utility room is like closet or similar rooms no? Does furnace, water heater branch circuits in utility room require AFCI?

Thanks to "or similar rooms" in the NEC all you can get here is opinions,. The Final call will be the AHJs

Has anyone here had AHJ install AFCI utility room circuits and anyone here had AHJ not install AFCI utility room circuits?

What I am saying is what are people’s different opinions regarding AFCI in utility room aside from AHJ since I am sort of contractor to AHJ decision is mainly on me.

Go ahead an make the call. Its tough being the decider sometimes. IMO a utility room is pretty specific and I wouldnt consider that "similar" to anything else on the list, but I also hate AFCI :poop:and I am not big man decider 🧐

Since you are "sort of contractor to AHJ decision is mainly on me", you make the decision and carry the liability :)

side note: " sort of contractor to AHJ decision is mainly on me. " sounds like being "sortta pregnant"
contractiors and AHsJ either are or are not.. never met a sorta AHJ.

The AHJ (Authority Having Jurisdiction), aka Electrical Inspector, should be the final decision-maker when it comes to interpretation of the code relative to an electrical installation. If you are the AHJ, then it's your call. If you are not, then ask the AHJ for his/her ruling on whether or not a Utility Room is similar to a Closet.

NO harm but in fairness to folks bidding jobs the AHJ needs to make the decision. On a single home, no big deal but if you are looking at 100s of homes you are talking about $$$.

That, and the thousands of comments on this forum about the cost/benefit of AFCI in terms of safety and troubleshooting down the road.
