2005 NEC 210.12(B) still requires all outlets in a bed room to be AFCI protected. This also included smoke detectors in the 2002 code. 2005 NEC 760.21 was changed to state that fire alarm systems are not to be put on a GFCI or AFCI. Manufactures have in there instillation instructions that these smoke detectors are not to be installed on GFCI and now AFCI circuits and even be on its own circuit. Dose 2005 NEC 760.21 Apply to smoke detectors thus allowing the use of a non-AFCI circuit in the bedroom?

Re: AFCI

Smoke alarms that are installed in dwellings are not apart of a fire alarm system and therefore not under the scope of that Article. The NFPA 72 and the manufacturer's instructions should be used to determine installation requirements. 210.12(B) still applies.
