Outside of an improper receptacle cover, indoor-rated timer, lamp-cord extensions, possibly an unlisted triple tap, and running the cord in front of a door, I'd say you got a legal install there. Although I'm not sure if this combination of violations is indigenous to catering halls, though.

Inside there were about 12 different style of recessed cans and trims. I don't think any 2 lamps were alike. Same for the ceiling tiles. I know these are caterers and not interior designers or construction oriented people, but you'd think they would purchase ceiling tiles and replacement lamps in case quantity?

Are caterers as bad as restaurants? Note to sparkies: Never do a service call at your favorite restaurant. It's kind of like reading the label on a can of Vienna sausage, only with cigarette butts and more bacteria.
Very true. I've done work in several restaurants which I'll never patronize.

However, I am happy to say there are a few which don't fit that category.
