AHJ fancies

I was reading old posts (FUN!) and saw the liveliest discussions on AHJ differences, and wanted to see what others face.
In my area (Northern Missouri) our AHJ has the following "quirks"
NOT ALLOWED
mc, bx/ac, non metallic boxes in the ceiling for support of lighting fixtures
ALLOWED
nm (romex) above grid ceiling, where supported by other than grid
QUIRKIES
if an area in the home is large enough to support a ceiling fan, a UL listed fan support box must be provided

Let me see what the rest of you face daily?? -Thanks Mixedbag

Thats crazy. Is there any room in a house that isn't large enough to fit a ceiling fan? I'll bet I can find a cheap, small fan at Lowes that would fit in a closet :)

It sounds like your AHJ is picking and choosing and even modifying the code to their taste. All of which is wrong. :mad:

That said, I don't see any harm in allowing NM cable above drop ceilings. In fact, the Massachusetts Electrical Code ammended the NEC to allow the practice to continue.

And I like the idea of fan boxes in all rooms large enough. (Except closets and bathrooms.)
Fans are extremely common these days and this is one area where the code needs to catch up. I am against "what if" rules in the code, but requiring fan boxes is sensible, IMO.

I agree on the fan boxes. I usually put them in anyway. I beleive in MA it was required in the 96 code but was removed at some point. But if it isn't required then the inspector can't usually require it.

Isn't that like letting the County Sheriff decide what the speed limit is going to be?

Hockey referees and stock car track officials have to follow the rulebook. He should too.
