I am designing a lightning protection system for a 45' tall aids to navigation steel light tower. The tower will be mounted on an existing concrete foundation and is surrounded by approximately 10' of water. Any suggestions on how to properly ground this tower being surrounded by water? If this tower was on land, a ground loop would be installed and each leg of the tower grounded to the ground loop. Also, the top platform of the tower is 6' X 10'. How many lightning rods would be required? One at each corner? Thank you for any recommendations!

I don't mean to be rude about it, but since you are "designing" shouldn't you already know this type of thing?

I think if it is in the US the FAA has a design guide for this kind of thing. One would think that requirement would be in the spec you are designing to.

This is an aids to navigation tower for boating. Have never encountered a tower surrounded by water before. The spec that I have and editing for this project is for towers installed on land. Unfortunately, I can not find anything for towers surrounded by water. Just seeking some help from someone who has experienced this situation before.

Try NFPA 780.
