Can anyone clarify EXACTLY what the NEC says about disconnects and their proximity to their respective units? Inspector is saying I must move my units at least 3' away from the disconnect.

I might be going out on a limb, here but I am guessing that the inspector is requiring the A/C disconnect to meet the working space requirements of 110.26(A).

If there is gas involved as in a gas pack, then perhaps he is thinking of the regulation that gas utilities require the disco to be 3' from the gas meter. I never heard it applied to a unit.

is it directly in front of the disconnect? if so, its got to be moved 36" out.

Does not need to be 36" away.It can be just 2" left or right of the unit. 110.26 calls for 36" clear space. Place disconect anywhere within that 36" space. Do not place behind unit.

Did you ask for a code reference?

What do you do on an RTU when the disco is mounted directly on the unit itself?

There is no rule that says a disco must be 3' away from the unit.

You guys don't think that the inspector was taking about 110.26(A) as Chris mentioned? :-?

tripowergto is an HVAC installer and he said

It sounds to me like tripowergto installed his HVAC units in front of the ECs disconnects and the inspector is enforcing 110.26(A).

I missed the fact that he is an HVAC guy and yes I thought Chris was right on. I was just throwing out other possibilities.

That's the way I read it too. Not moving the unit laterally 36" away from the disco but straight away to get the required 36".

tripowergto see if these examples help.
