This will settle a lot of arguments. This is from the First Revision Report for the 2023 code.

440.14 Location.
Disconnecting means shall be located within sight from, and readily accessible from, the air-conditioning or refrigerating equipment. The disconnecting means shall be permitted to be installed on or within the air-conditioning or refrigerating equipment. Disconnecting means shall meet the working space requirements of 110.26(A). ...

It's about time. As I mentioned in another thread this idea of ambiguous wording to cover every scenario needs to removed from the NEC. Here in NJ the powers that be have stated that 110.26 does not apply, let's hope that this changes their mind.
