The a/c guy put the unit at the top of stair way to bonus room and the contractor closed in a space for it with a small door my question is I did put a light with switch there inside the door a gp rec is in the hall right beside the door opening. Now where to put the disconnect the little area is crowdwd with duct if I stick my head in and put the disconnect right above the door opening I`ll have room to put it but its in a bad location If I move it to the side you would have to crawl through another opening to disconnect then come back to the door opening. What working clerances should be looked at here?To me to put it where you need to access it by another door would be a real hassle and would most likely cause someone to not pull the disconnect to service the unit.

Wire it straight and put a lock-out device on the branch circuit panel or provide a unit switch as suggested by hillbilly. Either way is probably better than a poorly located disconnect at the unit.

Thanks guys I didn`t think I could install a disconnect inside a unit seems like hide and seek to me? The disconnect would oviously need to be labeled ( hey I`m inside here) because it would not fit in most cases inside the designed electrical cabinet so it would be in another compartment.Does anyone actually do this seems the inspector wouldn`t know it either.I think I`ll do the lockable breaker thing. Thanks again
