Re: AL SERG Cable

What is SERG?
If you look at the cable or conductor jacket, if it has code letters such as XHHW-N then you can go to Table 310.13 and it will tell you what it can be used for.

Re: AL SERG Cable

sorry for the incorrect term. Should have been A-SER. I'm concerned about corrosion or burn thru on the aluminum grounding conductor exposed to a wet location in and underground installation.

No. SE or SER is not for underground in conduit and certainly not direct burial. See Article 338. You need to use type USE and there is a limit of 6 feet allowed within the building. From there it muse change over to SER if necessary.

"limit of 6 feet allowed within the building", keep in mind this is a local code, not NEC. The type of cable and raceway for service entrance conductors is frequently limited by local codes.

Re: AL SERG Cable

My errata list does not have an errata for Art. 338.

Which list is that errata on ?

Re: AL SERG Cable

Go to www.necdigest.org or www.nfpa.org and when you get to the website, click on resources. At resources it will direct you to all of the NFPA TIA and Errata. Scroll down to 70 2002. There are four pages, it is on page two.

Errata 20. Page 70-186
338.10(B)(4)(b): Revise second paragraph to read:
"Type USE cable shall be installed outside in accordance with the provisions of Article 340. Where Type USE cable emerges from the ground at terminations, it shall be protected in accordance with 300.5(D). Multiconductor service entrance cable shall be permitted to be installed as messenger-supported wiring in accordance with Articles 225 and 396."

This errate has deleted the sentence
"The length of the cable extending indoors to the first termination box shall not exceed 1.8m(6 ft)."

When at the sites mentioned above, you might want to print out the errata and correct your copy of the NEC.

Re: AL SERG Cable

I wonder why the errata for the 2003 Handbook does not 'correct' the same error.

Is it possible that the errata for this Section is still not correct ?

Have a meeting to attend tonight. Maybe tomorrow I will ask NPFA why .

Maybe Charlie could get a quicker answer.

Re: AL SERG Cable

Just looked at the May 2001 ROP on page 503 , proposal 7-209 338-4(b) then looked at the May 2001 ROC pages 262, 263, 264 ROC comments 7-96, 7-100, and 7-101 of which I am confused.

I've always understood that USE did not have the flame retardant to be used indoors , but it was allowed for the 6 feet to make terminations inside.

Charlie, - HELP !

Re: AL SERG Cable

Glenn, my definition of an expert is one who realizes how much he doesn't know about a particular subject. I am a recognized expert on the NEC. However, I know very little about USE cable except we use a lot of it but it is not listed or marked.

The bottom line is that you know more about this cable than I know, sorry. :)
