Yes, there is. Old abandoned cables are supposed to be removed unless labeled for future use.

This is something that is very rarely enforced.

Low voltage cables, as is security, cable TV, perhaps even telephone, yes. Power cables, as in power to 120 volt general purpose receptacles, no.

Checked the time...800.2, 640.2, 725.2, 760.2,820.2, and 830.2 all talk about abandoned cable.

You see--- I was thinking about mc cable ,nm cable etc. I always thought they just needed to be terminated in a jb and covered but not removed. Is that correct? and where is that reference, if you know?

I've always just capped them off because the removal of systems still standing, normally meet the fire withstand rating of fifteen minutes, I believe, is part of the logic. Communcation cables are "open" to exposure in the their nature in a building.

Dennis - I agree with you, however, 760.3(A) references 300.21 and depending on how much "grey" matter you posess you could correlate that article to mean the same as the previously posted.

I know of no art that says you must remove abandoned wire other then that supporting comm/fire/low voltage due to the fire load that could be available. Just my .02

Don't miss the point that Charlie brought up. That spaghetti bowl of MC or AC cable above a hung ceiling is permitted to remain even if it's unused and untagged.
