It sounds as though you need to contact a competent electrician to advise you in person after having examined the wiring you are discussing. This site is professionals assisting professionals and giving you advice if you are untrained would not be the intent of this forum.

There are some standard procedures for terminating old aluminum conductors. The one that you mentioned was quite commonplace back in the early 90's. You can search this forum for past threaded on the proper way to perform this task. Or as wbalsam1 said you can hire an electrician who is experienced in this type of work.

Right here.
It's not really a recognized method, but one I've seen used successfully often enough that I'd have a hard time telling someone that there's a special hazard.

while we are on this subject: when you do run across Al wire and are doing service work to repair / replace devices do you
1. pigtail the Al with copper using one of the approved methods
2. replace devices with AL/CU rated devices.

I just put a bid in on a 2000 sq ft house that has all AL wire and HO wanted price to replace devices. I opted to quote the job using AL/CU rated devices and re terminate the splices using Al rated connectors/ Purple twister nuts.or alumiconn connectors from king inovations
