Re: Aluminum Wires
If the wire is the old aluminum (1975 or earlier), even the CO/ALR devices will have problems. These devices were brought out to be used with the aluminum alloy that was used starting in the mid 70s. The best method, other than replacing the wiring, is the Amp crimp connector. This requires a special tool and training from AMP. You cannot buy the tool and must be a AMP trained and certified contractor to rent it. The connector is called
COPALUM
Note that there are other UL listed connections for copper to aluminum, but there is some controversy about their use. The Ideal
Purple Twister is the one that is involved in the controversy. Do a search for aluminum wiring and read the information before deciding how you are going to proceed.
