A house with AL. wires needs all new devices. How about some suggestions from those whom have encounterd this before?

Re: Aluminum Wires

Rewire the entire house with copper wiring

or

Replace the devices with those listed for use with Aluminum wiring. (CO/ALR)

I also believe there are some new aluminum to copper extensions that are aprroved and listed that do not viloate 110.14.

Good Luck! :)

Re: Aluminum Wires

If the wire is the old aluminum (1975 or earlier), even the CO/ALR devices will have problems. These devices were brought out to be used with the aluminum alloy that was used starting in the mid 70s. The best method, other than replacing the wiring, is the Amp crimp connector. This requires a special tool and training from AMP. You cannot buy the tool and must be a AMP trained and certified contractor to rent it. The connector is called COPALUM
Note that there are other UL listed connections for copper to aluminum, but there is some controversy about their use. The Ideal Purple Twister is the one that is involved in the controversy. Do a search for aluminum wiring and read the information before deciding how you are going to proceed.
