Since the problem with aluminum wiring in residential houses is at the screw down points of the devices, why wouldn't an AFCI be sufficient/acceptable to deter the fires. It detects arcing and sparking,..... so why install purple wirenuts as a deterant when they could still cause arcing and sparking without being detected, if not done correctly?
 
It appears that the most common type of failure is a glowing connection and that is not a type of fault that an AFCI can detect. It is a high resistance connection that produces excessive heat, but does not arc.
 
Ok, after seeing some of pictures where fires occurred, you would think that AFCI would be involved. I think it's better than leaving them alone.
