I am thinking about using plastic bar boxes instead of metal simply because the rod on hanging fixtures always gets in the way of that screw in the center any thoughts?I do not know how heavy the fixtures the home owner will pick will be he says small supposed to be pendent fixtures.

You could always use a fan box on a bar. I've never seen one of those with a center stud, and you won't have any suprises with fixture weight.

Why not buy a pack of various sized nipples at Big Box:

...or cut the one that is too long down ~ and save the cut-off for next time.

With a bar style fiber fixture box, provided you don't screw in the sides and just nail it, changing it out to a remodel fan box after the fact isn't an impossibility, if you find that you need the extra support.

Pendants should be okay. But, I would say yes, your asking for trouble. If you get a large hanging light.
I don't use bar boxes. I have not had any problems.
If I need to center a light perfectly. I will cut a 2x4 and nail the box to it.

i use a standard plastic o/h box everywhere except bedroom, living room, dining room, and foyer. in the bedrooms & living rm i use a plastic side-saddle fan box; dining and foyer get a 2.5" deep fan box for heavy fixtures.

Only time I use the bar boxes is in hallways where the rafters/joists run parallel with the length of the hall, and I need to get the lights centered. There won't be much wieght, as hall lights are pretty light.
