PE licenses are generally offered State by by State. In New Mexico where I am licensed for example, the State Board will review your educational background as well as experience, and let you know if you are eligible. If you are not eligible, they will let you know what must be done to become eligible.

I suggest that you contact the licensing board in a state you want to register in.

Most states require verification of your education and experience, along with letters of recommendation from supervisors. Some states require letters from PEs who supervised you. You would also have to pass two standard exams. The first exam covers the fundaments of math, chemistry, physical science, and engineering. A person can take this exam while still in college. The second exam, Principles and Practices of Engineering, goes into more depth in the specific area of engineering that you want to have as your specialty. Each of the two exams is 8 hours long. I took them on consecutive days, 12 years after college, and I would recommend this to nobody!

Please note that if the 4-year degree was not from an accredited US college, it is a bit more difficult for the state to verify the degree to which it is equivalent to US schools. I have heard that several colleges in India have already been evaluated, and their students have less difficulty in getting full credit for their degrees.

The standard tests are administered by the National Council of Examiners for Engineering and Surveying (NCEES). I suggest you start by looking at their web site: www.ncees.org.

Best of luck.
