800 amp breaker on generator. using parallel 500 mcm 75deg C= 380 amp. Would equal 760 amp capacity. 240-4b next higher breaker can be used, so I should be in the clear?

There are two schools of thought on the Forum. Some say simply "yes" based on 240.4(B). Others, myself included, say ONLY if your calculated load is 760 amps or less, so, it would depend on your load and your AHJs view.

Those that say say either don't know or they are assuming the calculated load is good.

As Gus says, yes with the wire as long as the calculated load is 760amps or less. Generally speaking it will be but make sure because you may get called on to prove it.
