When do you apply the derating requirements for ambient temperatures?

Example, we are wiring docks with type W cable. Most of the time the ambient temperature will be lower than 30C. In the summer, it will be higher than 30C. I thought I had read on this forum that you use the average temperature for the ambient calculation and not the highest anticipated. Is this accurate?

Thanks,
Lou

It might have been a post of mine that you had read. That is my opinion of what the rule should be. I don?t think I have stated it in any stronger terms, and I will not say that that is the rule. As Bryan mentioned, it is probably going to be an AHJ call.

If it was me use the worst case. Let's say up in the ceiling in a factory building in the summer gets 180 degrees and in the winter it's cool at 70 degres. We don't average them out do we. We us the higher temp to figure out what wire to use.
