IU guess the point is that it would be so easy to specify a genuine maximum receptacle count per circuit of given ampacity, even provide a simple table, that the omission of such data speaks that there is no specific limit.

As Tom Baker posted in one of the threads linked to in George's post above:

I get Charlies argument. Its the same as track lighting, the NEC give us the VA per foot, for a load, but no limit on the number of actual heads when the track is installed.
