I want to know why annex D examples D1a and D2a are so different in the way they calculate the net calculated loads. for example, why is the range nameplate used in D2a and not in D1a?
and why does annex D1a use 35% demand factor from table 220.42 towards the lighting load and D2a does not?:
annex D1a

9000 VA= general lighting load
first 3000 VA @100%
remainder @35% (table 220.42)
=net load
plus range @table 220.55
and dryer load@table 220.54
=net calculated load

annex D2a
general load=
9000 VA for general lighting load
range @ nameplate
dishwasher VA
dryer VA
+ water heater VA
= total
application of demand factor (220.82b):
first 10,000 VA @100%
remainder @40%
=total of general load
plus electric heat*40%
=total

As derek stated the optional calculation uses the nameplate for a range , for instance, while the standard calculation does not
