I heard here recently here in my area that an electrician was shocked off of 277v on a neutral doing maintenancel. Apparently it was a shared neutral and it knocked him off the ladder and he broke his hip, possibly ending his career.

So lets becareful about working on mwbc (shared neutrals) out there. Personally i think there's some serious training that needs to be done dealing with mwbc on a national level, kinda like an Osha mandate for electricians.

I can see why the NEC 2008 verision wanted to make it required to have handle ties on mwbc, even though i think the intent is good, I do not agree with this change because the result will end up with more people working hot, or taking higher risk by removing the wire off the hot breaker so they wont have to turn off other circuits to do the work.

Well im done. Just remember to be careful out there.

Ouch Brother.,,

not too long ago i just got hitted with 277v netural it threw me about 4 metre across and dropped down about 3 metre and got really nice nasty black et bleu mark on my sholder. [ noting broken at all few boxs broke my fall a bit ]

my curpit ?? EGC is corroded cause the 277v netural to floated and got it hard.

Merci,Marc

Don't want to be cynical considering this mans pain, but it wasn't the voltage level, or the wiring of a MWBC that broke his hip. I was the failure to follow rule #1 - Treat all wiring as energized.

I've been nailed by a 480/277 neutral back-feed - hurts.... Been knocked off a ladder too. I hope I have learned my lessons from it.

Well this goes back to PPE, Ive become more concience of using it more, at least try to, like the gloves and insulated tools, long sleeves etc.. WHEN you need to work hot.

That fall could killed you or at least left some muscle damage. lets be careful out there.

that part i do agree with ya.

when i was working on that system and what i did i tested with voltmeter and amp clamped to verify to make sure the system i am working is officeally disconnected or off line. but somehow by time i pull one of the netural conductor i saw spark i say oh Merde!! next thing i am in the pile of boxes and got up and back track why it cause it and found the EGC connection is corroded up so that part i learn a lesson on that one next time make sure to check the EGC first before you move the netural conductor.

Im a little lost on how the ground is affecting that neutral. Was this a service panel where the equipment ground and neutral were bonded together??

Brother.,,

it is service panel location and i was above the panel that time moving the conductor and for the conduits it was PVC which i was not too thrilled what someone did not set it up right.

anyhow i got that fixed and replace the conduit with proper one and that building got some stray voltage and current issue. that part is taken care also once i got the EGC fixed up properly.

Merci,Marc
