Another island question

I started to ask this on the other thread, but the water was already muddy enough.

We installed a SABC receptacle in the island. The island also has a forced air gas grill. So, one of us just added a recep below the countertop to the SABC on the island, and the AHJ tagged it. I can talk with the inspector Monday, but what gives? Is it because of the blower? I have done the same thing in the past, for a gas grill without a blower, (just igniter) and it passed. Any opinions?

Re: Another island question

I'd say the inspector correct. However would the vent fan motor be considered "supplemental equipment"?

Hmmm

What do the specs require for the grill?

Re: Another island question

You can not plug a fixed appliance into the SA receptacle.Start looking for a way to fix it.Having done something before only means you were not caught.

Did you read the exception that Pirre posted?

IMO, the gas grill can be supplied from the SABC.

Re: Another island question

I was going to agree with Scott, but I re-read the exception prior to posting, per Charlie's rule.
('02) Exception No. 2: Receptacles installed to provide power for supplemental equipment and lighting on gas-fired ranges, ovens, or counter-mounted cooking units.
This doesn't say "igniter" like I thought it did.

It says "supplemental equipment."

So even though you can't supply a wall-mounted hood from the SABC (since it's not a counter or wall receptacle outlet), you can supply a hood that is integral to the cooktop. ;)

I was thinking more or less the same thing.

My WAG is that the exception was intended for igniter's or lamps with low current requirements.

IMO it was not intended to drive a possibly 9 amp fan.

But the wording allows it.
