I replied to a comment in another pool thread, but I am planning to wire an above ground pool that I was going to consider storable. The pump motor that was sold with the pool says not for use on storable pools. It also says use #8 or larger for bonding. Since this is not a double insulated pump, am I now required to meet the permanently installed pool requirements? Did the pool company just cost this customer more in installation costs by selling the wrong pump?

If you are certain it is a storable pool by definition than I would not wire it up with the said pump. Let the owners know that the pump is not compliant6

As Dennis notes: Check the NEC definitions. Unfortunately "that I was going to consider storable" is not in the definition but 42" is :)

This information from the UL "White Bopok" may prove interesting:

"Pumps investigated for permanently installed pools are so identified and are additionally marked ‘‘Do Not Use With Storable Pools.’’
Permanently installed pool pumps are intended to be permanently connected to the water circulation system and they may be permanently wired or provided with a 3-ft nondetachable power-supply cord terminating in a grounding type attachment plug. The attachment plug may be of the locking or nonlocking type. Units provided with locking-type attachment plugs are

intended to be installed at least 5 ft from the inside walls of the pool and are marked accordingly. Units provided with a nonlocking-type attachment plug are intended to be installed at least 10 ft from the inside walls of the pool and are marked accordingly. Permanently installed pool pumps are provided with an accessible pressure-wire connector for equipotential bonding.
Pumps investigated for storable pools are so identified and are additionally marked ‘‘Do Not Use With Permanently Installed Pools.’’ Storable pool pumps are intended to be connected to a water circulation system constructed so that the pump may be readily disassembled from the system
for storage and future reassembly to its original integrity. Storable pool pumps are provided with a minimum 25-ft nondetachable power supply cord terminating in a grounding-type attachment plug, are double insulated, have no accessible grounded metal parts, have inaccessible noncurrent-carrying metal parts connected to the grounding conductor of the supply cord, and do not have an equipotential bonding connector."

So I didn't word it correctly when I said I was going to consider it storable. I thought it met all the criteria for storable. I will stop by again and double check the depth.

So if it really is a storable pool, then there is no way to make the installation compliant with this pump? I read on another post where someone suggested a ground ring and bonding it to the lug on the pump. I guess I would need to bond all of the metal posts around the pool also. Still not sure if that could be done and meet code.

A different pump might be needed, but how to make the store make good on their mistake? Not my problem.

If the mfgr states not to be used on storable pools then it can't be used as a compliant installation if the pool is storable.

Thanks all. My mistake. The pool is 54" deep. Now I'm reading up on the proper wiring method for a permanent pool since I've never done one. Mike Holt has some good explanatory info.

Good thing I didn't quote a price yet.
