answer to OT transformer question

This is another myth that needs to be fought, "ground" has nothing to do with this condition. Ground is just like any other conductor.

Like, hillbilly said in the other discussion, the reason there is no short circuit is because of the impedance of the transfromers. To wind the 7,200V conductor around the core takes many hundreds if not thousands of feet of small diameter wires but even though these windings have relatively low resistance, any resistance helps prevent a short circuit between two conductors. Additional current limitation comes from the reactance of the core of the transformers. It becomes very technical with terms like "back EMF" but what it boils down to is, to the power grid a transfromer looks a lot like a motor.
