DOES ANYBODY KNOW IF THERE ARE ANY CODES FOR INSTALLATION AND MAINTENAINCE FOR AUTOMATIC DOORS?
I AM CONCERNED WITH LIABILITY ISSUES, THIS IS AT A HOSPITAL , HIGH TRAFFIC AREA. CAN I GET ANY REFERENCES ? THIS IS ''a federal hospital ''.

I know there is nothing about this in the NEC.

Try the NFPA-101 Life Safety Code, and the NFPA-99 Health Care Facilities. :)

According to the NEC hospital systems are divided into two parts: the normal system and the emergency system. The emergency system is also divided into the life safety branch and the critical branch. The code says that automatically operated doors "used for building egress" fall under the "life safety" branch of the emergency system, along with exit signs, alarm systems, elevators, etc.

Re: any codes for automatic doors certifications?

Bryan is right about NFPA 101 and NFPA 99, but the NEC does specify Auto "Egress" Doors will be fed from the Life Safety Branch. 517.32(G)

This is direct wording from the aformentioned NFPA 99.

There are also concerns with interfacing with F.A. systems and this would be covered in NFPA 72.

One more place to look would be the AIA "Design Manual for Health Care Facilities" this may not be the actual name of the document but is close.

Feez, the two systems are actually the Normal and Essential systems. The Essential system is then broke down into two Systems which are the Emergency and the Equipment Systems.

The Emergency System is comprised of the Critical Branch and the Life Safety Branch.

A note to the Elevator portion of the Life Safety Branch is that it is only to supply the cab lighting, controls, communication and signal systems. The motors or MG sets would not be fed from the Life Safety Branch.
