I get e-mail invitations all the time form people on Linkedin and about a dozen other business networking sites. I delete ALL of them. For my business, one man - mostly service work, it seems like a waste of time. A couple of years ago, I started to fall into that whole BNI, et al networking scene. While I'm sure it works for some larger companies, it's not for me! I'd like to read some responses from others who might have had success with these things. As far as facebook is concerned, when asked by people why I'm not on facebook, my usual reply is "because I'm not a pedophile!

I'm registered on a lot a social networking sites. And that's all I've ever done. I registered so my username is then taken and no one else can use it.

All the time. I get recommendations from past customers on Linkedin for future customers to see. It has generated business for me. Well worth it. YOU DO NOT HAVE TO BE A PEDOPHILE. Just smart with generating more business.

I use Facebook but not for anything business related. I'm such a yahoo on there I'd hate for potential clients to think it reflects on my work. I'm connected to actual friends and family on there.

All my business is word of mouth. Those people know how to find me. I hate spam and telemarketers, ESPECIALLY those that call me trying to make money off my business.

we have a business facebook site, but i have nothing to do with it. i'm not sure if its been of any benefit or not; i haven't asked and its never come up. but its there.

i have a linkedin profile but i've never used it. a GC i did some work for sent me an email invitation a few years ago. as far as i know, he's the only person 'linked' to me.

as far as personal facebook or myspace pages, i have none.

I must agree with Chris1971. Put another way - as an electrician, which I am not BTW, you may say "why would I carry a hammer, I'm not a carpenter" but there are occasions where it comes in handy and helps you out. Linked-In got me my job, with help from a guy who I hadn't been in touch with since we were in the Navy. His buddy (VP) was able to see my resume/experience and it helped in his decision to call me versus just writing me off as someone who was just a friend of a friend...I may not ever "use" Linked-In again but it worked and who knows.

FB really is a "social" site but for all the "word of mouth" guys, here's your word of mouth opportunity! Almost everyone I know is looking for an electrician, plumber, roofer, etc. quite often...use your trademark avatar and just monitor what you say so you're not too goofy. :D An old HS friend (realtor) helped me get my house. Would rather use them than someone I didn't know...

Sure, these sites aren't going to be your only tool by any means and they could never take the place of this forum, but why not use everything available to you? Just saying...

I created a Facebook page for my company. I don't really keep up with it like I'd like. It's a free source of advertising. If a free ad could possibly turn into 1 service call, it's worth it to me. You can also advertise. My favorite is Angie's list so far, best return on investment.
