We are installing a new 3000a service and I was just talking my switchgear guy about what he is providing. He said the incoming bus/service from vault to the CT cabinet is bus(3 phases) in a huge trough( about 4' x 3'). He did not have a pic....I was wondering if abyone had something like that??

Thank you very much

Look up bus duct by any or your supplyer. Looks like wire way with fingers on the ends.

For a 480 volt service I would expect to see something like GE Spectra. Pictures are on page 43. SquareD ( whoever they are now), Siemens and others make it.

If it's in a trench make sure it's dry. You have to be able to get to all the joints to pull maintenance on the bolts ( check torque).

Yeah I've seen that before, the 4'x3' enclosure threw me off. Thanks a lot.

What do you mean by "pull maintenance on the bolts"

Maintenance on bolts.

Maintenance on bolts.

Some ( all I am pretty sure) want the bolts retorqued periodically.
GE has an indicator bolt you just have to look at.
Section 368.10 says the joints have to be inspectable.
If the bus runs throught a "Trough" either in the floor or something else the joints have to available for inspection.

I know and have seen bust duct plenty but when he said "in a 4'x3' enclosure" that is somehting I have not seen before....at least that big.

The typical riser bus duct is low impedance type bus duct (sandwich bus). Your supplier may be furnishing Non-Segregated Phase Bus Duct. For this type of Bus Duct, the bus bars are within a rectangular metal enclosure but larger spacing between the phase bus bars. My guess at Bus Duct at 480V, 4000A would be on the order of 3' wide by 1' deep.
