Well, since I'm typing here's some useless info. The plant I was at for a while used more water during wash-down in 1 minute than I do in my house over the course of a year! Wash-down was an 8 hour shift!

Most of the larger plants use 1 million+ gallons of water.... a day! And they have to treat all the wastewater too.

As for needing to know Spanish, I know the vast majority of agricultural workers are Latino, but the maintenance and supervisory staff as well? I don't think they are going to turn loose unskilled workers on high powered dangerous industrial machinery and other industrial systems, but I could be wrong.

Obviously you haven't spent much time in California.;)

Chicken houses are fun to work in also, walking in crap all of the time, incredible number of flies, everything electrical corroded from the ammonia, nothing is above a nema 1 enclosure, built cheap as possible. Roosters running up behind you flogging the back of your leg. Chickens trying to steal your wirenuts and screws!

If you like chicken, eat all you can before you go to work in a processing (kill) plant because you'll never wan't it again.

Nah....I like chicken too much to ever give it up...horrible processing environment or not. Cheap chicken is an American right, you know. ;)

Thanks all. I'm definitely aware of the blood/guts/smell factor, but they seem to be one of the few industries available jobs posted. Maybe the low morale and turnover is a factor there. ;)

That pay scale is definitely disappointing, but expected.

You are very wrong ,on that assumption.

Peter, have you thought about the refineries in Texas, oil, gas, paper, etc?
That's where I got my start in industrial. Check out maintance
divisions for Exxon,Shell,Chevron,IP, Reliant Energy, etc. Stay away from
the shipyards though, shipyard work sucks IME. Heavy Industrial
work never bored me and was always a challenge. Good luck to you
Peter. :)

I see you're in Raeford, home of House of Raeford. I'm guessing you do work for them?

I have never did any work for them, but I know the maint. supervisor and the family that owns the plants. They are good people but as with any business they put business first. I have though, seen them load their ref. trucks with ice and give it away to hurricane victims when there were rip off artist selling 5lbs for $10.00.
