Not knowing where to post this, I'm posting it here. Does anyone know what this device is? A customer of mine sent it to me, and they said it's above a doorway in their kitchen. Thanks in advance!

It's a mini-candelabra lamp socket in a Despard-type plate hole, probably for a maid call or something similar. Is this a larger house?
 
looks like a broken Despard indicator light socket.

any hearing impaired people there. maybe used for a door bell once.

why would one need an indicator above the door?
 
I would think its for a mini lamp to tell them something else is on. Perhaps attic, outside flood,basement,garage etc

Back in the 50's my uncle wired our house and in hallway on the wall was a bank of about 10 lights that did just as i posted above. Was kinda nice added touch.
 
Ask them if there was a button on the dining room floor, under the head of the table. I see those on old houses around here.
