Looking for the output: 175w metal halide wall mount fixture. 120v input, where, if anywhere, could I find the output of the ballast? I read 290v but the fixture didnt work, owner says new bulb. Any ideas?

try a new lamp. if it works, great! if not, replace the ballast and the capacitor. the owner is the one paying the bill.

Jason, Most of the time it's either the bulb or the cap. If you know how to check the cap for being open or shorted do this first. If checks OK and the ballast doesn't smell bad try the bulb. Not sure if you know how to check the ballast. Bulbs get pricy at this wattage.
Bye now

If you really need this info, visit the web site or catalog of the manufacturer of the ballast and/or fixture. I looked at a MagneTek catalog, and found the open circuit volts of a 120v, 175w MH ballast listed at 310, so I am assuming that the different brands will have similiar info available.

If you just want to get it going, try the lamp, or follow the other poster's advice.

Re: Anyone Know Where I Can Find This

It was just that there were 4 fixtures, had to travel out of town to get bulbs and/or ballasts. Ironically, none of the 4 worked but they did have power. Anyway, thanks for the help.. it turned out to be that the owner bought the wrong bulbs, and 1 bad ballast or cap. I asked this question because like I said I had to travel out of town to get bulbs or ballasts and wanted to make sure I only made 1 trip.

Re: Anyone Know Where I Can Find This

Along these lines, has anyone had much experience with the testers for HID lamps. I use the model by Greenlee, but I'm sure there are other brands. I'm speaking of the type that look like an old transistor radio with an antenna.

I've found with MV, HPS, and MH lamps that I will get an occasional false positive, (test good, but is really not). I assume this is because of some defect or failure in the igniter or starter portion of the lamp. But they seem to work great on diagnosing neon lamps, (which is why I bought it), and on fluorescent lamps.

Just curious about others experiences.
Thanks, Wayne Cook
