Looking for anyone that has taken the Power Limited Exam, especially the Minnesota exam.

I've been tempted several times to take a class that is offered here in Minnesota taught by the "Low Voltage Guy." The cost seems a bit high, anywhere from $289.00 to $325.00. However, if anyone has taken the class, and says it's worth it, I would most likely go ahead and take it.

In the meantime, I've been studying "Understanding Low-Voltage and Power Limited Systems," by Mike Holt. I also bought the "Basic Electrical Theory," by Holt. Both books are very good. I just hope I can learn enough to pass the exam.

At any rate, I would like to hear from others who have taken the exam to see what their thoughts are. Thanks folks.

Imm a ND boy that had to take the PLT test in MN becouse about 25% of my work does go into MN. I took a cheap $80 course at Ness Electronics in ST paul. The test was on the 2005 nec book and the MN book. Code reference was not needed in your answers. Study the nec book Definations are important and the communication sections. Know how to caculate conduit fill and ohms law stuff
Know what type is wire should be used in all situations or at least where to look it up. I was unprepaired for the math stuff and converting VA to amps, cable resistance and had to guess on 5 questions. I thought I failed but got a 79. I got lucky. It hook the whole 5hrs for me on those 70 questions becouse I had to look up lot of answers. $300 for a class? I would study and learn from Mike and the guys on this site first then take the test. If you fail you can always take the class and retest.

Re: Anyone out here taken the PLT exam?

Thanks jacobsond for the feedback. Yeah, I heard that I didn't have to memorize code reference from a couple of other guys. That's good.
I've been doing a lot of "catch-up" work on calculations lately. Lots of Ohm's stuff, Voltage drop, etc. I guess the part that concerns me the most is the Grounding-Bonding thing. I spent most of my life as a carpenter. I've only been doing the network cabling for a couple of years. Anyway, I still need to know as much of the code as I can because I'm still training to be an electrician, too.
The site from Minnesota on Power Limited stuff said the exam is rated from 1 to 5 on how hard the test questions are. They claim that most are around 3.5 as far as the difficulity.
From reading your post I guess I should study more on conduit fill calculations. Also, I guess I should say that most of the exam should be on things like whether or not to run plenum, riser, or CM cabling, not running Cat5e in the same conduit as 14/2 wire and commensence things like that. At least I hope that's what the exam is about. Not questions trying to trick a guy up.
Anyhow, thanks for posting back.
