Article 422.10 says the branch circuit rating for an appliance must not be less than that marked on the appliance. Shouldn't this be 'more' not 'less'? For instance, this means a 30 amp branch circuit can protect a 15 amp rated appliance? But if it was worded for 'more', then a 15 amp branch circuit can supply a 30 amp appliance. While this isn't practical it seems safer than scenario #1, no?

Read 422.11, as well.

Sometimes I don't know when to ask questions when the answer can literally be 2 paragraphs over but I get so fixated on trying to understand a particular topic so I ask anyway. Ok this makes sense. Although it is convoluted. 422.10 says not less and 422.11 says not more. How about they make a section 422.09 that says must be EQUAL :)

Not so; you have it backwards. A breaker does not protect an appliance. What a breaker does protect is the branch circuit conductors. You size the branch circuits to handle the connected load. The appliance's nameplate rating gives you the load.
