An electrician friend called me yesterday telling me his experience with some appliance installers. My friend had roughed in a kitchen remodel that included a slide-in microwave that goes in an island. He roughed it to the specs provided on the unit which called for 240V on a 20A breaker. The HO called him and said the installers were there but couldn't install the MW because the breaker wasn't sized right. He (friend) explained to the HO that he just went by the spec sheet which called for a 20A 2-pole breaker. The HO put the installer on the phone to explain what he needed. Installer said he needed a 20A Total breaker. My friend said that was what he put in. The installer said no, the breaker you put in says 20 on each side, I need one that says 10A on each side for a total of 20A!
He said the installers just left and said they would come back when the correct breaker was installed.

My friend told the HO that he should contact the mgr of the store and tell him the correct breaker was already there and they should tell their installers to quit trying to play "electrician" and just install it!

I have disabused more than one aspiring genius of that same notion. Can get very frustrating!

We had appliance installers removing the high temperature conductors and whips and install cord and plugs on them for electric ovens. Many of these installers are nothing more than movers doing electrical work.

I've had the same nitwits trying to school me on breakers and such.

What's amazing is that homeowners and contractors alike will take that moron's word as gospel truth and be like..... "you didn't install right..." all because that glorified handyman told them something dumb

Air Conditioner "techs" are in the same category, imho

Brand new install 4 wire recpt for apartment units. GC had trim carpenter do them. He was cheeper than than a licensed electrician. All the dryers and ranges were done like that. Some ranges had dryer cords and dryers had range cords.
They had the nerve to say we installed the wrong recpticals.
