I've recently purchased a home where the circuit breaker box has no additional room for additional circuit breakers. I have woodworking equipment that operates off of 240-V supply. Would it be allowable or advisable to create a branch off of the dryer circuit or another one, say for the oven that runs off a 240 breaker?

I move around a bit and in previous locations I've used a homemade extension cord comprised of 10/3 600-V capacity cable with a 20 amp breaker (installed in-line with a single breaker box), with dryer plug on the supply side and a receptacle box. The new home doesn't have that option as the dryer is located some distance from the garage.
