Im applying for my nj electrical license and not sure how i am suppose to fill out my work description. Should i be writing a formal paper? or just be listing steps on how to do certain work? Someone told me to write it like i was speaking to someone. a service change for example. first i shut the main breaker off, second i pull the meter, third i disconnect the wire from the main lugs in the main panel etc. i dont want to get denied because i wrote a bad description... seems stupid but wanted someone elses input.

I got my NJ license last year, I just wrote down what I did on daily basis for each company I worked for. In my opinion the like to hear that you know the terminology. Like working for Joe's Electric shop I performed electrical work in mostly residential applications. Mounting boxes on 2x4 studs drilling holes for NM cable or ac cable installed rescesed lighting etc etc etc

Local building and planning permits have section headed "describe work"

I usually write "excellent"

An insurance paper I was filling out had a blank marked "sex". I think they probably wanted "male" or "female", but I wrote "yes". A women from the insurance company called me up and was not amused by my answer.

Keep it simple. It's not the Spanish Inquisition. They want to know what your experience is and the basics of what type of work you've been doing over the last 5 years. You'll need (3 I think) letters of recommendation and you may have to provide check stubs to prove you've been working for a licensed electrical contractor or have been through an apprentice program.

Have you taken the electrical exam and passed it ?

Good luck.

I believe they're looking for terms like residential, commercial, and industrial. It would be silly to try to list details of individual jobs.

When I had to do the same on my georgia application, I just wrote something along the lines of ....

“Single and multi-family dwellings, commercial office spaces, warehouses & industrial facilities, agricultural facilities, class I Div I fuel dispensing stations, etc....”

The question was something like, “you must have experience in all aspects of electrical work. Please list your experiences below.”

They accepted that.
