I'm New At These Forums And Had Very Little Time To Sit And Browse All The Diofferent Topics, But This One Is Particularly Realted To Me . I Asked A Friend Of Mine To Sart A Job In County That I Had Moved To Recently . The Need For Electrical Companies Was Great. So I Convinced My Friend To Apply And So , Got The Job .
He Had Encouraged Me For Years To Study And Had Repeatedly Ask Me To Seek My Journeymans Licence , I , As A Family Man And Allwaysa Looking To Bring The Bacon , Had To Rush To Where Ever The Job Was Located . And In That Particular Need I Had To Concentrate On The Cash From Hard Work Rather Than Using The Brain . After Ten Years Of Working In The Field I Got To Run My Friends Outfit Where I Had To Do Pretty Much Every Thing From Square One . Did So For 2 Years And Completed The Job With Honors . Do To The Current Market The Work Is Slow And I Am Only Biggining To Study For My Journeymans Licence This Because I Have Learned The Importance Of The Theory To Be Able To Understand To Reasons Behind The Rule . At The Same Time I Have Had Known Licenced Journeymans That Have Only Their Cards To Show Because They Do Not Have The Love For The Job Or Sense Of Duty For The Field They Are In . But I Do Agree That The Reason For A Person To Be Licensed It's To Hold Them Accountable For The Safety And Performance Of Any Electrical Operation But , Just The Same , The People That Learn From Experince And Are Un Able To Hit The Books Due To A Difficulty To Absrob Knowledge Through Reading , Are Also Capable And Some Times That Fact , It's Har D To Accept .

Gaston,

First off, welcome to the forum. If you're looking for a place to learn this is it. I must admit I had a hard time reading you post. The use of capital letters for each word made reading somewhat difficult. Sounds as if your searching for some specific answers without asking any specific questions. Do you have any specific questions?

Phew! Was that post an eye test, maybe?

No, I think he's touching on a problem with written tests and trying to learn from printed materials.

I wrote about this over the "need help teaching 3-ways" thread -- there are three ways people learn: by seeing (which includes reading), by hearing, by doing. People whose dominant learning style is neither seeing nor hearing, which includes me, have to learn by doing the thing. I read countless books on programming back in the 1970's, and sat in many a lecture in college in the early 1980's -- it wasn't until I had a computer I could sit down to and pound on that I began to understand.

My guess is that someone like Gaston, if I understand what he's saying (and yes, definitely an eye test), is only going to pass the journeypeep test when he's been through enough practice tests that he's mastered the skills required to look things up in a code book under timed conditions.

Okay, I just took a minute to read the original post. Not much to add, other than 'I agree'.

Best of luck in your studies. Now that you've had so many years in the trade, your learning curve for the licensure testing will be shortened quite a bit.

My advice on professional licensure testing is a bit unconventional. I've generally recommended to guys that they just go ahead and take the test NOW. Then, once you fail, that may provide you with a pretty reasonable gauge of the areas that you're weak in and need to study. Also, you'll have familiarized yourself with the testing procedure, and those "butterflies" will already be gone the next time around.

OK here's my two cents for what its worth. I love reading and studing but nothing sinks in. When I was in college I could study all day and fail the test and my wife would look at it once and know right way what I could not see. Well when I got a chance at getting into electrical apprentice program I changed my method of studying. I was working at being a industrical electrican, I had to learn high voltage, PC's, min-volts. bending pipe, trouble shooting, setting jobs up and you name we did it. What I did was built myself training boards I would put things like PC's, starters, etc. and practice troubling shooting. I would take things apart and see how they worked. It work so well that when we started getting new people my boss ask if I would build more ( I built six ) for training and testing. We had our own power plant, mechine shop, everything alot to learn. So what I am trying to say is get test books, Mike Holt has test to practice on your computer. I studied two hours in morning and again at night. If you want badly enough you will do it. I did this raising two kids my wife passed away before I got into my apprentice program.

Thank you for the wellcome . I believe that all the people in this forum is up to ........." good " and thanks to mike holt I'll be able to ask and perhaps give some of my experince to whom might find it useful . Sorry to every one about the capital letters !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
