Every year our local JATC has a little competition between all the upper term apprentices. There are several events, including an NEC and general knowledge test, materials identification, a hands-on residential wiring thing, a hands-on motor control thing, and conduit bending.

Last year I wasn't a senior enough apprentice to compete, but I wound up getting to grade the written tests. The year before, I was the designated photographer (The training director complained that I took too many pictures of the doughnuts and pizza). This year, I get to compete! There are going to be ten or eleven contestants, I think.

The winner of the competition gets to go on to the Western States Regional Electrical Contest and compete against the top apprentices from all over the Western U.S. Pretty stiff competition there.

So wish me luck! And while I'm at it, does anyone else have a similar contest in their local apprenticeship jurisdiction?

That sounds like that would've been right up my alley.

Yours is the first I've heard of, but I went through the non-union program over here.

I'm looking forward to all of it except the Material ID part. They find some reaaaaaaalllllllllly weird stuff. They just set everything out on a couple of tables. Each item has a number. You have a sheet of paper and you walk around looking at everything. You can examine it from every visible angle but you're not allowed to touch or move the item. You also have to use the correct term for the object, not just trade slang. There's usually only one "gimme" (like a wire nut or a light switch) but then like 25 - 30 really obscure things.
