Does NEC describe somewhere what an APPROVED handle tie would consist of??

I don't think you'll find it in the NEC. If is is approved it will be approved by some agency for the manufacturer. In other words, I don't think the EC can approve it.

I would think it would have to be a handle tie made by the same company that makes the breaker to be considered an "approved handle tie"

Here is the definition of approved from the NEC:

"Approved. Acceptable to the authority having jurisdiction."

Also the 2005 NEC changed the term "Approved handle ties" to the term "Identified handle ties". This was in a effort to clarify that a piece of wire or a nail are not permitted to be used as a handle tie because they are not "Identifed" as handle ties.

Hope this helps.

The only entity that can "Approve" somthing in the NEC is the authority having jurisdiction (AHJ).

Going off of Chris' statement, most jurisdictions look at UL or FM listings. If they list it, its approved.

I'll go along with Ken and Chris as this came up at the Calif. Electrical Inspectors meeting.
