This question was asked of me and I need a little help with it.
There is an existing basement with an unfinished room that is going to be converted to a bedroom. All the alterations have been made so this room can be done by building code. There is an existing circuit to be used and an arc fault breaker to be added to feed this bedroom circuit. The question is :Can I use this circuit for the rest of the basement area that is not finished by adding a GFCI Outlet to protect the outlets that is required to be GFCI protected? If this is done how will the Arc fault and GFCI react to each other?

I have never heard of AFCI's & GFCI's conflicting with each other when installed on the same circuit, but there's probably not enough installations in place to make a statistical analysis of any problems. But, this is just my opinion.

Doing what you suggest is perfectly Code-legal.

Would having the bedroom and basement wired together be in violation of 210.52(G) for this particular application?

(G) Basements and Garages.
For a one-family dwelling, at least one receptacle outlet, in addition to any provided for laundry equipment, shall be installed in each basement and in each attached garage, and in each detached garage with electric power. See 210.8(A)(2) and (A)(5).
Where a portion of the basement is finished into one or more habitable rooms, each separate unfinished portion shall have a receptacle outlet installed in accordance with this section.

210.8 only requires GFI protection.

210.52 only requires a receptacle.

Neither prohibits them from being on the same circuit.

210.11 deals with required circuits, and the OPs installation is not mentioned there.

All understood....but my question is specific to his job.

My feeling is this:

If the circuit is AFCI protected at the panel, and that circuit feeds the bedroom, then goes to the rest of the unfinished basement. As long as the receps in the unfinished portion are GFI'd, life is good.

I see no conflict in having both AFCI and GFCI protection on parts of the circuit. Once the '08 gets adopted, that will be more commonplace anyway.
