Article 210.12 Arc-Fault. List all the locations that Arc Fault Breakers are to be installed. Question: Does this article still apply to an addition added onto an existing house with standard breakers. Or is this addition covered under a grandfather clause. Can't find this information in the NEC. Thank you.

What code cycle does your jurisdiction use?
The 2011 code will require them If you add , change , move, extend a branch cicuit that would now require them. The other codes were silent in this area.

NEC 210.12(B)

Specifically addresses remodels and additions. AFCI's are still required. In Oregon we have adopted an exception that exempts any extensions.

Virginia is currently using the 2008 NEC. Thank you for all of the comments.:)

Yes, that is correct, the 2008 NEC with amendments is used by reference through the IBC. The NEC is not adopted directly.

I believe this a dwelling unit, so actually the 2009 IRC with amendments applies.

Here is a breakdown of how it works by links, starting with DHCD. Note that the DPOR only regulates licensing, not code adoption.

The last link states this:

The International Residential Code is applicable to the construction of detached one- and two-family dwellings
and townhouses as set out in Section 310.

and this:

Change Section E3902.11 to read:
E3902.11 Arc-fault protection of bedroom outlets. All branch circuits that supply 120-volt, single phase,
15- and 20-ampere outlets installed in bedrooms shall be protected by a combination type arc-fault circuit
interrupter installed to provide protection of the branch circuit.

Forgot to mention, this may apply to you also:

908.7 Carbon monoxide alarms. Carbon monoxide alarms shall be provided in new buildings and structures in
accordance with this section.
908.7.1 Alarm requirements. Carbon monoxide alarms shall be single station, hard wired, plug-in or battery type,
listed as complying with UL 2034, and shall be installed in accordance with this code and the manufacturer's
installation instructions.
908.7.2 Where required. Carbon monoxide alarms shall be installed outside of each separate sleeping area in the
immediate vicinity of the bedrooms in dwelling units and outside of, but in the immediate vicinity of, each
sleeping unit in all Group R occupancies located within buildings containing fuel-fired appliances or where a
dwelling unit or sleeping unit in a Group R occupancy is attached to a Group U private garage.
