Hello:
My customer wants to put a 12 amp tread mill on a dedicated circuit in his livingroom which will need an AFCI breaker. Will this breaker give him problems?
Thanks,
Jim

it shouldn't, but I have had an arc fault breaker trip with a treadmill, but I'm not sure if it was from overloading, or a fault in the treadmill itself.

I haven't done a treadmill in a couple of years, but I seem to recall that the directions mentioned not protecting it with a GFCI. If it doesn't like a GFCI, it might not like an AFCI either.

Whether or not I am remembering correctly, you might want to check the directions (if still available) or call the manufacturer.

Rav,

Any motor starting under load will have a good arc in the Switch.
This arc may trip the AFCI breaker.

Given that AFCI are required in many places,
I wonder how this would be handled.

Unless this is something that is going to be inspected, I would just go with a regular ol' 20 amp breaker and be done with it. If you go with the AFCI, I think you're just asking for call-backs. ::cool:

Don't worry, arc faults have been perfected and work flawlessly under all conditions. If you should hav a problem you can count on the manufacturers to assist you.

I'd leave the breaker on the supply house shelf where it can cause you no grief.
