I am doing a service panel upgrade only (100Amp to 200Amp)in an older dwelling with very few equipment grounds. Will Arc-Fault breakers be required for the bedrooms due to the panel change?

I would strongly recommend it. The closer you bring existing installations to current code the more limited your liability becomes. My jurisdiction has made the dscision to require this and we look for compliance on inspection. Some have complained that the afci's are not compatible in all cases with the existing wiring and circuit design, however our building director feels the afci protection is more important than the contractors conveniency or ease of work.

In my jurisdciction, recommended, not required--unless you install a new circuit.

Re: Arc-Fault in upgrade panel

OK,thanks. GE's instructions for instalation of their AFI's, says to use "only 2 conductor with ground cable such as NM-B". If that is the manufacturers requirement will it be out of compliance when used with old NM cable without a ground?
