I am wiring a house in an area where arc fault breakers are required , I've never installed one , My question is Can you use a 3 wire circuit or do you need a seprate nutral ?
Thanks

Re: arc fault

i am in the same boat. I have never installed them but i believe they are similar to GFCI and should not share the neutral. If i were you i would check the web, like the SQD or Eaton site and download an instruction sheet. I am sure they can clarify. My curiosity has got me now!

Re: arc fault

They are like GFCIs...you can't share a neutral unless you buy an expensive two pole AFCI.

Re: arc fault

Thanks guys , Thats what I figured . This is for the bedrooms only? this town I'm working in is the first town in the area to switch to the 2005 , Wish all the towns were on the same book, some on 02 and some on 99 (NY)

Re: arc fault

I was reading the cb today and it said Dwelling Unit Bedrooms. All branch circuits that supply 125-volt, single-phase, 15- and 20-ampere outlets installed in dwelling unit bedrooms shall be protected by an arc-fault circuit interrupter listed to provide protection of the entire branch circuit.

So if the bedroom has a ceiling fan and high hats , Will they effect the AFCI I read it as protecting the outlets not the lights , sorry if this is a stupid question
