arc fault

Originally there was the parallel arc fault which only detected parallel faults. The newer models are a combo unit that detects both series and parallel arc faults. The newer branch/feeder afci do both series and parallel

Branch/feeder AFCI.
This device is installed in the panel as it is a breaker. It can be a breaker feeding a circuit or a feeder. It provides parallel and series arc-fault protection and is thus a combination afci also.

They have not yet made a receptacle afci but it is soon to come.

The code requires this type?
Yes, The nec requires the combination type for at least 2 code cycles. It would depend if you are on the 2002 code or later. You will only find the breaker not the receptacle that is available but either one would be a combo unit.
