Remodel old home,we are under the 2002Nec, we are adding a switch for closet lite, two outlets,a smoke dector in bedroom, hall and on each level,would this have to be completely rewired to meet the 2002 code,what do you think?

The new must be to code afci required.The smokes are not a NEC issue.Local ahj might not make you add them or at least back off on the interconnect

How can you half on arc-fault and the rest not? Code says all openings to be arc-fault, smokes also.

The code is not retroactive. It only applies to the new circuits that you are installing. Circuits that serve the new bedroom outlets will require AFCI.

Would be nice if easy to put them all on afci.Might even be easier than running a new circuit.

what good are the arc-faults if only one or two are to be on the, the rest of the room can cause a fire, I thought they were to bring things up to prevent fires.

what jim is saying is the NEC does not require the installation of the smoke detectors.
If your local authority requires them or if you are installing them on your own accord (I would reccommend some type of smoke detector system) then the smoke detector system would have to meet the applicable articles, ie. AFCI protection, box fill, wire support/securing, etc....
As Don stated, Code is not retroactive, but you can choose to install extra AFCI breakers.
Bear in mind there can be local ammendments that you would have to follow.
