Does anyone know if Arc Flash calculations are required per NFPA 70e? I am being told that is had to be done per code?? I cant find where it says it is required. Please advise.

Also has OSHA adopted the NFPA 70e and if so does it mandate 70e compliance? Can the owner be cited if it does not comply?

I know there will not be any easy answers but anything info to put in the right direction will be very helpful.

Thank you in advance.

Short answer, Yes NFPA 70E 130.3 requires an arc flash hazard analysis.

OSHA does not adopt NFPA 70E, but can look to it as the electrical industry safety standard. The owner can be cited for a violation of the OSHA general duty clause if an employer does not provide a workplace free from electrical hazards. Complying with the provisions found in NFPA 70E will show that the employer is engaged in complying with the most recognized electrical safety standard in the industry.

Are you talking about "ARC FLASH" or "AVILABLE FAULT CURRENT INTERUPTING RATING"? If your talking about AFCI it is in Art,110.9 & also in the 2011 Art,110.24. as far as the requierments but not the calculations.

Technically NFPA 70E does not require calculations, see 130.3 Exception #1, and #2. However, Table 130.7(C)(9) cannot be used unless you know the available fault current and opening time, both of which are only available from some type of analysis (see specific notes 1-4 to the table).
